After studying Biology at Penn State, I translated my love of life sciences into a medical degree. Soon after becoming a physician, I also became a mother first to 1, then 2, then 3 sons! With them, I embarked on a grand adventure of growing and learning through children’s books, imaginary play, and travel together as a family. Throughout those full years, I snatched bits of time for creativity in the form of photography and memory keeping, attempting to freeze time by documenting stories from our family’s life. When I next looked up, those little boys were incredible adults, scattered across the country, living grown-up lives. I retired from the Emergency Department, and we moved our empty nest to State College where, almost 40 years earlier, I’d met my husband in college. With uncertainty and excitement, I stood in front of a blank canvas of space and time in this new chapter of my life and wondered, how should I fill it? I listened to first the whispers, then the shouts of my soul, urging me to learn to paint and draw. Now, I spend as many hours as I can (& often more than I should!) in my lovely spare bedroom-turned-studio doing what I love, painting and drawing. My life is in full bloom! I have circled back to the flowers and trees I loved so much in the early years of my biology degree and again, I study nature. With my eyes and hands and heart, I interpret my love of the natural world through paint and collage, pencil and pastel, texture and color, lots and lots of color! Welcome to the imperfect, joyful, exuberant garden of my heart!
