Mythología: An Exploration of Stories Through Nature’s Lens
The word mythology comes from the Greek mythología (combining mythos and logos) to roughly translate to the spoken word of the people. Mythologies exist across all cultures, providing a framework to understand both the world around us and the human condition. This practice of recounting histories and giving meaning to shared human experience has been vital throughout history, as can be seen in how many different ways we refer to this concept. In addition to mythologies we have fables, allegories, euphemisms, folklore, legends, et cetera. These stories have permeated all forms of art in an endless sequence of retellings and reimaginings throughout time, through literature, sculpture, painting, architecture, music, theater... and so much more.
The very best art deals with connection: to other places and times, to the natural world, and to other people. In creating this collection, I drew from mythology, poetry, and unique language to inspire illustrations that each tell a story. The imagery I gravitate toward is grounded in the natural world, with concepts that are inspired by plant and animal symbolism. The cyclical nature of the seasons––and how this can be a mirror for the cyclical nature of life as we experience it––also offers constant inspiration. My hope with these illustrations, as with any story, is to ignite curiosity, stir emotion, and explore the line of shared human experience that connects us all.
“The world is full of magic things, patiently waiting for our senses to grow sharper.” (W.B. Yeats)
